In the StarTimes UPL, this afternoon was the first leg of the Busoga United vs BUL FC 2019/2020 fixture where BUL FC played host at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru. This game is Busoga United’s first win against BUL FC in as many games and the money team’s first loss of the season after winning against Police FC and Express FC in their opening two games.
In a packed stadium, BUL FC started with a lot of confidence given their previous StarTimes UPL (Uganda Premier League) conquests. All their efforts were however fruitless in the first forty-five minutes. Abbey Bogere Kikomeko, Busoga United’s tactician, made a tactical second-half substitute in which Lawrence Tezikya a junior team graduate replaced Musa Magumba. The forward line with Tezikya, Madondo, and Wani was a reminiscence of the Jinja SSS forward line that won the school 2017 Copa Coca-Cola National Post-Primary Championship in Mbarara.
In the 72nd minute, Center Referee Moses Oloya issued a penalty when Ivan Wani was brought down in the area by BUL FC’s Walter Ochola. The penalty was converted to a goal by Boban Zirintusa making it 1:0 for Busoga United.
In the 84th minute, Joel Madondo took a perfectly heavy shot from outside the box to make it 2:0 still in favour of Busoga United. The 4th official added four minutes to the game and in the 3rd minute, Boban Zirintusa’s pass found Lawrence Tezikya well-placed in the box to make it 3:0 for Busoga United.
The result elevates Busoga United to 6 Points, just like BUL FC but only separated by the former’s superior goal difference. Busoga United’s next game will be at home this Saturday against Onduparaka FC.
Talk about football in Uganda will peak the Busoga region in memories for having produced a number of talents to the national team for years. This is still maintained by the ever-growing football clubs from the era of Nile FC, Coffee, and Police FC among others. Busoga United FC and BUL FC are now playing in the top tier.
Soccer fans are always divided on which side to support given the free-flowing soccer talent exhibited by these teams. The Jinja Derby is now between BIDCO-sponsored BUL FC and Jinja SSS established Busoga United FC.
These teams have played together in the Uganda Premier League for more than a year. The egos between the two clubs make their fixture a proven and worthy date. The egos are rooted right from their feeder teams Jinja SS and JIPPRA, transfer of players, up to the team management.
