Bernard Mbayo, the Councilor representing Main Street West Parish to Jinja Municipal Council was yesterday afternoon temporarily released. Mbayo was given a police bond and is expected to report back to police on the stipulated date.
Bernard Mbayo was arrested on Thursday 31st October 2019 on an allegation of soliciting a bribe from a UPDF officer Lt. Edrine Ochieng. According to available information, Lt. Edrine Ochieng is the developer of Plot 16 Naranbhai Road for which he’s said to have bought.
It is said Mbayo had stalled the developments on the said property unless the developer could financially facilitate him. It is then that Lt. Edrine Ochieng put together marked notes of UGX500,000 which Mbayo was allegedly arrested receiving.
Bernard Mbayo was detained at the Jinja Central Police Station for a night before being transfer-driven to Kampala on Friday evening to probably face the anti-corruption court, which sits in Kampala.
“I wish to thank all those that supported me unconditionally during this time. Thank you. Unfortunately, I cannot talk about the charges right now but will address the press soon,” said Bernard Mbayo while talking to Skizar last evening.
Bernard Mbayo’s arrest drew mixed reactions from the Jinja public. Some supported his arrest while some condemned it. Some sections of the public cited his arrest as a setup while others declared him corrupt on account of all the dubious deals done by the Jinja Municipal Council politicians and technocrats.
